Shopping for cosmetics when you’re looking to reduce your exposure to toxins can be a close-to-impossible task. After all, unless you’re a professional chemist, how are you supposed to know which of those very long words full of Xs and Zs on the label could harm you, your family, or your environment? We have been longing for a comprehensive list of all the potential toxins commonly found in our skin and body care, hair care, sunscreen, nail polish, and perfume, so we have created that list as a reference for you to come back to again and again.

To compile this list (which is as exhaustive as we could possibly manage), we spoke to Valerie Aparovich, biochemist, certified cosmetologist, and science team lead at OnSkin, and to Austin Shuxiao, MD, a board-certified internal medicine physician and founder and medical director at Peach IV.
Aparovich and Dr. Shuxiao shared the known and potential risks associated with a long list of ingredients (and a few contaminants that may seep into our cosmetics), while resources such as the Environmental Working Group, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), the National Library of Medicine, Cosmetics Info, and the Campaign for Safe Cosmetics served to verify the categories of products each ingredient (or contaminant) is commonly found in, as well as what its purpose is.
Dr. Shuxiao also shared a handful of cosmetic brands that you can trust to use as few toxic ingredients as possible in their formulations. We have listed these first to show you that there are amazing brands out there and to help counteract some of the worry that the list of potential toxins may very understandably cause. We’ve also included our guides to each category so you can take a look at our editors’ favorite clean beauty brands. On that note, it’s worth keeping in mind that not all toxins are created equal: While some are linked to cancers and reproductive and developmental toxicity, others only cause mild irritation in those with existing skin sensitivities, for example.
