We’ve spent the past ten years researching and wearing ethically sourced jewelry. These are our picks for sapphire and diamond rings that are conflict-free and made with sustainable materials to stand the test of time.

Princess Diana deserves all the credit for cementing sapphire and diamond rings into sartorial history. Her engagement ring, now worn by her daughter-in-law Kate Middleton, features a 12-carat Ceylon sapphire surrounded by a 14-diamond halo. You can easily find sapphires that match the same deep blue as Princess Diana’s, but the gemstone comes in hues of green, orange, pink, and purple. There are even white sapphires, which are lower-cost alternatives to diamonds. 💍

Sapphires and diamonds are the perfect combination for engagement rings, or any type of jewelry, but it’s important to learn where they come from. When gemstones aren’t traceable or ethically sourced, it could be tied to unsafe working conditions and unfair wages, environmental concerns, and funding corruption.

To navigate this sometimes sticky and overwhelming shopping process, we narrowed it down to nine brands putting in the work to ensure your jewelry is conflict-free and made with sustainable materials and methods. Below, review the best sapphire and diamond rings, including options with lab-grown or traceable gemstones, responsibly mined and recycled materials, and at a range of price points.

Why consider sustainable, ethical jewelry?

Sustainable jewelry is a response to more traditional jewelry production, which is associated with exploitative labor and causing harm to the environment (among other concerns). In other words, you can feel better knowing that your new piece of jewelry is delivered from a brand prioritizing responsibly sourced materials and workers’ rights. Seeking out jewelry brands and companies that are Fair Trade Certified or part of the Kimberley Process Certification Scheme are good signs that your ring or other jewelry item is both sustainable and ethical.

While any jewelry item can be beautiful, some come with harrowing backstories. Thankfully, there are several companies out there that have a clear conscience with their business practices and offer transparency about how they’re protecting workers and the environment in the sourcing and manufacturing process.

What should you look for when buying a sapphire and diamond ring?

There are a number of factors to review before you commit to “the one.” Here’s the need-to-know information for anyone making such a big purchase:

  • Sourcing of materials: Companies may recycle or repurpose gemstones and metal from old jewelry, source natural diamonds and sapphires from suppliers with ethical mining practices, or reproduce gemstones in a lab.
  • Quality of the gemstones: The craftsmanship of your jewelry is only as good as the materials involved. Pay attention to the 4Cs of diamonds and other gemstones (cut, clarity, color, and carat), but prioritize color for sapphires.
  • Sustainability efforts: Beyond the materials in the product, we look for brands that also bring sustainability to their packaging with recycled or recyclable materials, cut out middlemen for shipping, or keep inventories low to reduce waste.
  • Durability: If products are high-quality and long-lasting, they’re significantly better for the environment. And at a time when fast fashion is a convenient yet deeply troubling resource, durability is where quality overrules quantity.
  • Overall design: Modern-minimalist, vintage-inspired, and everything in between. After taking note of the materials and quality, you want to purchase a design that fits your personal style.

Our criteria:

Our team has researched and tested dozens of fine jewelry brands, scouring thousands of customer reviews to find the best sapphire and diamond rings. We’ve prioritized options that combine ethical sourcing, sustainability, and beautiful craftsmanship. We regularly update this list with new options that meet the following criteria.

  • ETHICAL & CONFLICT-FREE | Each of these rings is composed of responsibly mined or lab-grown sapphires and diamonds, with many brands offering traceable supply chains.
  • SUSTAINABLE PRACTICES | We’ve chosen brands that invest in eco-conscious practices — from using recycled metals to carbon offsets and closed-loop recycling.
  • DESIGN & DURABILITY | Whether you’re looking for simplicity or something stunning, all of the rings on this list are made to be cherished for generations.

For Brilliant Earth’s origin story, we have to go back to the early 2000s. In 2004, co-founder and CEO Beth Gerstein was on a personal and practically impossible quest to find a sustainable engagement ring — and she started Brilliant Earth to make the process easier for others (and better for the world). Founded in 2005, Brilliant Earth has spent the past 20 years perfecting their craft of made-to-order, conflict-free jewelry. With your choice of traceable natural diamonds and sapphires, or lab-grown gemstones, there’s so much to choose from in their extensive inventory. Plus, almost all of the metal used is “repurposed,” and their goal is to have 100% of metal repurposed or Fairmined by the end of 2025.

Whether you want a diamond solitaire flanked by two sapphires or a band creating a pattern with the two gemstones, there are tons of combinations to review before making your decision. On Brilliant Earth’s easy-to-use website, you can shop by the color, shape, or type of gemstone, and then complete your ring with the setting. Because of the build-your-own feature of Brilliant Earth’s designs, you can select a specific set or create a unique design on their website, via a virtual appointment, or at one of their showrooms.

Best For | Princess Diana reproduction ring
Gemstone sourcing | Kimberley Process cleared diamonds, lab-grown gemstones
Available sizes | 2 – 15
Prices starting at | $85 – $298

Started in New York City by two grad school friends who wanted to curate a collection of high-quality, moderately priced jewelry, Aurate is a win for your budget and the environment. Gemstones are hand-picked by their team, and recycled gold and sustainably harvested pearls are highlighted in their environmentally conscious efforts. These feel-good practices are expanded through their charity work, as they give back to support educational and women’s empowerment and entrepreneurship through partnerships with Mastery Charter, She Should Run, and Build NYC. We’d also be remiss not to mention their latest collaboration with the tennis legends at Wilson, just in time for the US Open.

Most of their gemstone rings are under $300, so they’re great for anyone who wants a lower-cost ring with a luxe look and feel. In fact, the brand has an entire collection called the “Diana,” which includes a reproduction of the iconic royal ring. There are also customizable toi et moi rings, an on-trend style featuring one sapphire and one diamond. French for “you and me,” this type of ring doesn’t let one gemstone steal the spotlight. Instead, it makes room for two — a swoon-worthy concept for an engagement ring or any gift to a loved one.

Customer Review | “This ring is so delicate and pretty. I love the unusual orientation of the stones in the vintage setting. It rests very gracefully on my finger. I get many compliments on it.” – Janis W. (Read more reviews.

Bario Neal was founded in Philadelphia in 2008 by designers Anna Bario and Page Neal, who wanted to create a collection with sustainability and inclusivity in mind. The result? The most expansive sizing collection, featuring gender-inclusive designs and customizations to make jewelry that’s wonderfully original. Most of their diamonds are recycled and from Canada or Australian, or lab-grown, and gemstones such as sapphires are high-quality and traceable. They exclusively use Fairmined and recycled metal, and their eco-friendliness extends to their packaging materials.

We love the unexpected blend of diamond and sapphires in this cluster ring, and you might not realize which is which. The champagne diamond and white sapphire work together to create a whimsical and delicate conversation-starter. There’s also a cushion-cut diamond flanked with clusters of yellow and apricot sapphire stones. These are handmade and made to order, so you can expect it to take several weeks for production, but rush services are available.

Customer Review | “Absolutely love this business! I stumbled on Bario Neal on a recent trip to Philly and their rainbow charm caught my eye. As soon as I entered, I was warmly greeted and able to browse leisurely before inquiring about the charm. I was told that the profits went to a local youth organization, and we had a lovely conversation about the history and mission of BN. I will absolutely go back every time I am in Philly, and already have my next piece picked out. Make sure you stop in if you have a chance – the people and wonderful and their pieces are unique, diverse, and gorgeous.” – Kellie W. (Read more reviews.

The time and care they put into their jewelry is reflected in how they care for their community and the planet. As part of their charitable initiatives, their long list of beneficiary projects includes Stop AAPI Hate and Nest BIPOC Jewelry Program.

Available sizes | 4 – 9

Is there anything Quince can’t do? They make everything from basic T-shirts to fine jewelry, and they’re all at shockingly affordable price points. They attribute these savings to innovating the traditional supply chain model and cutting out the middlemen, which helps reduce prices and waste. Shipping directly from the factory to your door, using 100% compostable bags and recycled plastic mailers, and ensuring their items are long-lasting and durable are just a few of their sustainability practices.

Perhaps the only con ot Quince’s sapphire and diamond jewelry rings? There’s only one available. 7. Linjer

BIPOC Owned
Budget friendly
Eco friendly packaging
FSC
Recycled materials

Best For | Delicate pieces
Gemstone sourcing | Lab-grown diamonds, ethically sourced gemstones
Available sizes | 5 – 9
Prices starting at | $641

Jennifer Chong and Roman Khan were troubled by the fact that they only saw two routes in the industry: fast fashion or luxury brands. So, the couple merged the two and founded Linjer in 2014, promoting high-quality materials with a direct-to-consumer model to avoid hefty markups. The brand says that all of their jewelry is made with recycled materials, ethically sourced gemstones such as blue sapphires, and conflict-free, lab-grown diamonds that are identical to natural diamonds. To further promote sustainability, Linjer makes their jewelry with 100% recycled gold and silver, prepares and ships packages with recycled materials, and offsets carbon emissions for every shipment that goes out to customers.

Similar to Quince, there’s technically only one sapphire and diamond ring sold on their website — and quantities are limited. The Sapphire Half Eternity Ring is made with five pear-cut blue sapphires and four round white sapphires that give the appearance of the classic sapphire and diamond combo. (And you can complete the look with the brand’s sapphire and diamond earrings.) For a more budget-friendly alternative to blue sapphires, Linjer offers several topaz jewelry items in two shades of blue.

8. Mejuri

BIPOC Owned
Gives back
Natural materials
Recycled materials
Warranty offered
Woman owned

Best For | White sapphires
Gemstone sourcing | Lab-grown gemstones, Ethically sourced natural and lab-grown diamonds
Available sizes | 4 – 10
Prices starting at | $128 – $198

There’s something so effortlessly chic and cool about Mejuri’s jewelry collection, which features several rings with white sapphire gemstones. In 2023, they launched the Social and Environmental Accountability (SEA) Program to “continually evaluate our suppliers and practices,” according to their latest sustainability report. With these trusted partners on board, they use both natural and lab-grown diamonds and the 99% of their precious gemstones are traceable. To reduce waste, they release new jewelry items in limited quantities. And to champion future generations and promote women empowerment (among many other causes), Mejuri has developed scholarship programs and created special products that give back.

If you’re on a mission to find white sapphires, Mejuri is your one-stop shop for lower-cost diamond dupes. There aren’t any sapphire and diamond rings offered, but we were wowed by the under-$200 rings with white sapphires. Unique eternity rings and metal-forward nesting rings are only a couple of examples from the extensive collection. Though many companies guarantee their gemstones are ethically sourced, Mejuri goes one step further to ensure they’re 100% conflict-free with lab-grown sapphires.

Our Editor’s Review | “I’ve been wearing some of the brand’s bestsellers for the past month, and I am happy to say yes. Mejuri does make high-quality, timeless pieces at a range of price points, and I’m excited to keep wearing the brand for years to come. Overall, I feel like the prices are fair for the quality, design, and longevity you’ll get from each piece, and definitely recommend opting for the sterling silver or gold vermeil if you want to save a little, without sacrificing quality.“ – Emily McGowan, Editorial Director at The Good Trade [Read the full review.]

9. Etsy

Made to order
Natural materials

Second hand
Small business

Best For | Customizable or vintage rings
Gemstone sourcing | Ethically sourced gemstones, Secondhand materials

Etsy is a hub for creatives, and their jewelry section is one of our editors’ favorite destinations during online shopping sprees. There are near-countless sellers, many of which emphasize their sustainability and ethically sourced materials. Unlike other jewelry brands, there’s almost too much to review at Etsy, so take your time and explore top-rated shops. For instance, we often turn to Estate Antique Jewelry for secondhand, vintage jewelry, but there are also plenty of modern pieces courtesy of artisans like Sarah of Sarah Elise Jewelry.
