Our Editor’s Review | “We tested two Thorne multivitamin options, each formulated based on age-specific needs. One was the Women’s Multi 50+, which is specifically designed to support the unique needs of perimenopausal or postmenopausal women. I did notice a slightly pink hue to the capsule, and I’m unclear what gives them that color, but I also knew there was nothing to worry about given the brand reputation. I chose to take these with food as the strong smell made me think that would be best. Although I experienced no stomach or digestive discomfort, I did feel as though I was ‘tasting’ these throughout the day. That said, I experienced a noticeable increase in energy.
For the Women’s Multi 50+, the dose is 3–6 capsules per day. Three will offer base benefits, and six will give optimal support. Although I am not yet in the 50+ age bracket, I am perimenopausal, so I was curious to see how I reacted and loved the idea that my body was being supported at my stage of life. I wanted to try the max dose, so I split it into 2 doses of three capsules each, taking three with breakfast and three with lunch. The most notable and immediate side effect was a niacin flush that occurred after the morning dose, which lasted approximately an hour. While a niacin flush does not cause any real harm, it can be rather uncomfortable and unsightly for an hour or so. If you are someone who experiences adverse reactions to higher doses of niacin (B3), this may not be the best option for you. I did not experience the flush after the second dose, and based on research, many people only experience niacin flush at the start of taking it prior to the body adjusting.”

Are there ingredients you should avoid in a women’s multivitamin?
It goes kinda without saying that it’s best to steer clear of any multivitamins that contain ingredients that may be harmful, poorly absorbed, or unnecessary. Excess amounts of specific nutrients (like fat-soluble vitamins and iron) can be dangerous, while an abundance of unnecessary water-soluble vitamins could end up being a waste of money since your body will not absorb excess anyway. High doses of beta-carotene or vitamin A, especially for former smokers, can increase health risks. Let’s be honest: There are a plethora of supplements that promise various benefits. Whether or not you go with a multi-vitamin versus a single-ingredient supplement depends on your goals and situation. Multivitamins are extremely convenient and offer broad coverage when the goal is to cover any nutritional gaps and support your overall health. Many also get mixed up with health fats, adaptogens, and herbal formulas for all-in-one convenience, allowing for easy incorporation into your daily routine.
